Two Arapahoe churches will continue their tradition of holding Vacation Bible School during the summer as the First United Methodist Church will host their event June 8-10 and Trinity Lutheran Church will hold their school July 22-26.
According to wikipedia.org, the origins of Vacation Bible School can be traced to Hopedale, Illinois in 1864 when Sunday school teacher D.T. Miles began a daily Bible school to teach children during the summer because she felt time was limited in teaching the Bible to children. The first Bible school enrolled 40 students and lasted four weeks with a local school used for classes and a park for recess.
In 1898 Virginia Sinclair Hawes was the director of the children’s department at Epiphany Baptist Church in New York City, she bean and everyday Bible school for neighborhood children during the summer. Dr. Robert Boville of the Baptist Mission Society learned of Hawes program and recommended it to other Baptist churches and in 1922 he founded the World Association of Daily Vacation Bible Schools.
