The Arapahoe Board of Education met for their regular monthly meeting on Monday, June 10, 2019 in the conference room at the school. Those in attendance included board members Lisa Anderson, Brad Schutz, Darren Warner and Rod Whipple along with superintendent Dr. George Griffith and the district’s business manager, Cassie Hilker. Board members Dennis Roskop and Chad Carpenter were absent. Visitors were Dale Helms, Jerry Hoffman, Jennifer Helms, and Drew and Kylea tenBensel.
In the absence of the president, vice president of the board, Rod Whipple, called the meeting to order and noted that the board followed the Open Meetings Act which was posted in the room. The board approved the absence of Carpenter and Roskop as well as the agenda as presented.
In his report to the board, Dr. Griffith informed them that summer projects are underway with the ag classroom, Mr. Blackmore’s office and coaches planning room and both music and vocal rooms are being painted. The summer meal program is going well with 341 total meals served the first week of the program. They are projecting that the concrete project will be completed this week and then the landscaping can start. The replacement roof will take a while to complete once the material arrives so that work will be done during the early part of the fall. The new design for the ventilation of the mezzanine area is currently out for bid. They are looking at putting on a rooftop exhaust system. The eleven month walk-through for the first part of the construction will take place on June 24 for those that wish to be there. The new gym floor has been re-done and they will return to fix some spots. The board discussed student fees. Dr. Griffith reviewed with the board that the elementary lunches raised from $2.75 to $2.85 and seconds raised a dime to $1.10. For grades 7-12, lunch prices raised a dime to $3.10 and seconds to $1.10. Regarding the cost of preschool, the board spent considerable time discussing this issue and ultimately decided to take no action until all board members were present and they had more information.
The board approved, contingent on her contract release from Chase County, Shasta Hilker to fill the fifth and sixth grade position. Griffith noted that Hilker came to them highly recommended with approximately three years experience.
Public comment was addressed throughout the meeting. The next meeting for the Arapahoe Board of Education will be on Monday, July 8, 2019. There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
